Complex Color Wheel, Art 1

This is a very cool project to introduce basic color theory to Art 1 students. I love this assignment because it has simple color mixing but it also looks pretty awesome when the design is complete. Painting in the black background in particular really makes these color wheels POP! ^ - ^

The concept of this project is to use the primary colors to mix and create all the other colors of the color wheel. Students must also create a value scale of tints going in toward the center of the color wheel. Pure colors are on the outside edge. By gradually adding white the colors get lighter in tone as they move toward the center.

Materials:

Square Painting Paper

Paper plate ( To trace circle on paper)

Ruler (To find the center of circle and divide the sections)

Protractor (To divide the circle into 12 sections)

Printer paper (for tracing design onto circle)

Tempera paint (Black, red, blue, yellow, and white)

Palette of some form.

Variety of paint brush sizes

Plastic cup for water

Paper towels

Process:

Take the square painting paper and use the paper plate to trace a circle in the middle.

Use the ruler to find the middle of the circle. This step is very important for the rest of the process to work correctly. Make sure your students take their time with this part. If they are having trouble getting things to line up later in the process it's possible they didn't center their design in the beginning.

Use the ruler to draw a line through the middle to divide the circle in half.

Next, use the protractor to divide the circle into twelve 30 degree sections.

Then take the printer paper and trace one of those 30 degree sections. Use the section you traced as a template to brainstorm sketches.

Now it's time to come up with your design! Use the printer paper template. When drawing your design you can just do sort of random lines that divide the section into 6 smaller sections. Your lines should go from side to side never top to bottom.

Once the student has their design drawn out then they use the template to trace their design over and over into each of the 12 sections to create the complete circular pattern. Note that every time the students trace into one sections, they will have to flip the paper over to trace in the next section.

Once the entire design is drawn out in pencil, the student will use their paint to begin mixing colors and painting in their designs. The goal is to create all of the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors on the outside edge of the design and then as the colors go towards the center of the circle, the students add white to create a gradual tint of the outside color.

The last step is to take black paint and paint all of the background. I find that the colors all pop and stand out more when you add the black background.

Now stand back and let everyone take in the complexities of your awesome complex color wheel.

This was one of those things we did with our very last days of school when there were very few students left in class. Grades were already done and the kids were asking for something fun to do. Several students kept asking to do some t-shirt designs so we gave it a go. This was purely for experimentation and not for a grade but we got some fairly descent results. I'm not sure how I would tackle something like this with an entire class, but it is fun with a small group.

I got the idea to try spray painting the t-shirts from this site. http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/tutorials/create-a-custom-t-shirt-stencil-design

Materials:

cardboard (to go inside the shirt to prevent paint bleeding through)

Spray adhesive

Newspaper or scrap paper to put at the edges of the stencils

Stencil (handmade or store bought)

X-acto knives for handmade stencils

Some poster board to create stencils on

Fabric spray paint or fabric spray dye ( I liked the dye better because the spray didn't last long) You can find a lot of fabric paint options at Hobby Lobby including fabric markers.

Process:

You can start by making your own stencils. We used poster board and x-acto knives to create ours.

Take your 100 % cotton t-shirt and put a piece of cardboard inside to prevent paint from leaking.

Spray a lite layer of spray adhesive across the shirt.

Lay down stencil and make sure its attached securely. Put scrap paper at the edges to prevent over spray.

Carefully begin spraying the shirt. Start off the stencil, continue across, and finish off the stencil. We found that when you are using the spray dye that it's important to only spray just enough to cover the area because if you spray too much it will bleed through.

Monochromatic Painting, Art 2

Well, its been an awful long time since I did my last blog post but I've got a plethora of new project pictures that I've compiled from an entire year of school. The first project on the agenda is monochromatic paintings. I really like this project because it's one where the students can choose almost any kind of content to include in their painting as long as they make it monochromatic. More advanced students can choose something more complex and struggling students can find something a little simpler. I find that when a student is personally vested in the imagery they're painting then they'll put forth more effort into the completion of the project.

Materials:

Acrylic paint (The ones I did last year were with tempera but acrylic would have been a lot better)

Variety of paint brush sizes. ( If you want consistent quality from your students then get a full range of decent brushes)

Water cups

Paper towels

Palettes

Thick painting paper

Process:

I did a short practice assignment before beginning the actual project because this was the first painting assignment we did in my Art 2 class. I had the class complete 6 color value scales. These were 1 inch squares, 7 columns wide and 10 rows long. The fourth row was pure color and above that were shades of the color and below were tints of the color. This assignment worked well to show students what colors they had to work with for their new project and how to mix them.

I told students a few days before beginning our paintings that they would need to find a personal photograph that they or a friend had taken.

I reserved some computers in the library computer lab.

Most students brought their photos in on a thumb drive or on their phone. From there we put them on the computer and played with the setting until they had a monochromatic photo in a color they liked. If a student brought in a printed photo then we just used a scanner to get it into the computer.

Once they acquired their photo then I let them choose what size grid they wanted to work with and they grided their photos and painting paper.

Next they simply began painting their project using only shades and tint of one color. I will warn you against using tempera paint. We used tempera for these projects you see pictured below and got some nice results but it was a real pain in the butt. You can't really work in layers with tempera paint the way you can with acrylic, and layers are a real big part of these monochromatic paintings. The tempera paint seemed to absorb each layer you tried to put on top so it took tons of layers to get the shade or tint that you wanted to achieve. Just use acrylic paint.

Art 2, Emphasis Colored Pencil Drawing

I did this same project with my students last year. The concept with this assignment was to use observational skills to draw an artist mannequin and then to use colored pencils to create a sense on emphasis in the background.

I love this project because it allows for a lot of creativity in the background. The students seem to go for it more when there is already something drawn on the paper. I also love how colorful these drawings become by the end. ^-^

I did this project with my Art II students. It was their first serious project at the beginning of the year. We started off by simply completing an observational drawing. I gave each student an artist mannequin to draw from as well as an HB drawing pencil and eraser For the lesson, I demonstrated how to sight with a pencil and how to block in a drawing. Then I let the students pick a position for their mannequin to stand. Each student spent two or three days drawing their mannequin in pencil.

After most had completed the first stage I gave the student's another lesson which was a lecture on emphasis. For this lesson we looked at a PowerPoint with several examples of ways to go about creating emphasis in a work of art. After the emphasis lesson, I explained to the students that next step in their project would be to design a background for their mannequin drawing using colored pencils that would create a strong sense of emphasis on their original pencil drawing. Before they could start on the background the students had to complete 3 thumbnail sketches and have one of them approved by me. I also gave a short demonstration about using colored pencils and how to blend and layer them.

Comment below with your ideas and thoughts. ^-^

One of the best things about teaching art is seeing all of my student's hard work come to fruition and displayed for many to admire. I feel fortunate to be in the county I am because every year we have a huge student art show in which all the schools and grade levels participate. Every art teacher in the county gets together their student art from the year to put on display for whoever wishes to see. Last year we had around 2,000 people during a 2 hour display. Below are some pictures from the event.

One of the interesting parts of being the art teacher is that many people will come to you with a wide variety of art needs. One fun thing I did this year was to repaint our school's spirit stick Our school mascot is a viking so late one night I tried to create a viking/celtic vibe with our school colors of purple and gold.
Art II Project

This was a fun project I did with my students involving comic strips. For this assignment we studied Chuck Jones, the inventor of the Looney Tunes, and we spent a lot of time drawing and developing cartoon characters. The end result was one comic strip from each student. We even had a little competition to see whose comic strip would be put into the school newspaper.

Materials:

Large drawing paper

Pencils

Rulers

Ink Pen

Colored Pencils

Procedures:

The first step is to develop characters and layout in sketches, as well as, an actual joke.

Once the students have settled on a layout then they have to measure out the boxes for their comic strip with their rulers. The size of our comic strips was pretty large.

The first frame in the strip needs to be some sort of title.

Everything is penciled in first.

Then go over everything with a quality ink pen

Lastly, I let my student choose whether or not they wanted color. If they choose color then we used colored pencils to fill in the rest.

Every year Google holds a drawing competition for all ages of students. Each year there is a different theme that students must take the Google logo and redesign it around. There are a lot of awesome prizes given out to the winners. Unfortunately I did not find this competition until after the deadline last year. Either way, I thought it was a great idea for a project so I went ahead and came up with my own theme and taught my students some of the basics of graphic design. Trying to sum up graphic design in one lesson was not easy but it turned out to be a fun lesson in which we looked at logos and symbols that we see on a daily basis. The assignment I gave the students was to redesign the Google logo based on the theme of their favorite children's book or novel. I gave them a Google template for the ones who needed it we used colored pencils to do the drawings.

In this project I introduced the students to zentangles. The basic idea is simple. A Zentangle is designed to increase focus and creativity. Instead of planning out everything with sketches and rough drafts, students have to focus on random drawings that deal with pattern designs. It's lots of fun. Some students will find it difficult to focus on a repetitive drawing but others will become so absorbed in their drawing that the whole room will fall silent. There are lots of websites with Zentangle patterns. http://www.zentangle.com/ This is the official zentangle website

Materials:

Drawing paper

ink pens

Process:

First, put a dot in each corner. Then draw a line to connect each corner and form the edges of the Zentangle. The rule is that you can not use any rulers because that's not what Zentangles are all about. So, it doesn't matter if the edge is straight or wavy.

Next, divide the space up into sections by drawing random lines across the paper.

Inside the sections begin drawing random patterns and designs.

For this project my students studied medieval art. We explored Medieval bestiaries and some of the mythical medieval creatures that appeared in them. Then we compared that to the fictional creatures created for movies. I played a YouTube video of a model monster being sculpted for the students to understand the process a bit better. The assignment was for the students to create their own clay creature of their own design. Their creatures had to be completely original and be able to stand on its own without falling over. It also had to have arms and legs of some form.
Art II Self Portrait Project

For this assignment we studied Rembrandt and his use of chiaroscuro. Students had to use the grid technique to create a self portrait with high contrast.

rulers

camera and photograph

drawing pencils and erasers

Procedures:

To start you will need a camera to take the student's photographs. I hung up a black cloth on the white board and put a lamp right next to it to create a spotlight. I had the students come up one at a time to take their picture. That night I edited the pictures on my computer and printed off a 4 x 6 black and white photograph for each student.

The students began by griding their photograph and then creating a corresponding larger grid on their drawing paper.

Next the students drew their portraits with pencils.

With all the testing, field trips and graduation it's good to have some projects that students can pick up easily wherever they left off after field trips and such. The last project I did with my students at the end of the year was a magazine bowl. Its great because the librarian usually gets rid of old magazines at the end of the year and I stock up for this project and other things for the next year. This is a good opportunity to introduce the students to recycled art and alternative media.

Materials:

Magazines

Elmer's glue in glue bottles

Mod Podge and paint brushes

Procedures:

Before beginning the project I took the magazines and cut them up with a large paper cutter. I just cut the pages in half long ways and left stacks of magazines on each student's desk.

I took the students through the steps of folding the strips of paper first. Take a strip of paper and fold it in half hot dog style. Open the paper, and fold each side into the middle so that the edges line up with the center line. Repeat that step again and then fold it in half. Now you'll have a neatly folded paper with an open end and a closed in, sort of like a tepee shape.

This webpage gives fairly descent photos. http://pradaforbreakfast.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/diy-fun-magazine-bowls/

To start the actual bowl you start with the base. The shape of the bowl is determined by the shape of the base. The simplest shape is a circle, but you can do almost any shape if you get creative enough. We managed to create heart shapes, circle, square, tear drop and star shape. If you do the star shape you might need paper clips to hold the paper in place while its drying.

If you are doing a simple round bowl the start by putting Elmer's glue along one side of a strip of folded paper. Then begin to tightly coil the paper around and around. It looks best to have the closed side of the paper pointing upward throughout the whole process.Once you get to the end of one piece just get another piece of magazine and continue where the last one ended.

Once you have your base created, its time to do the sides. To create the walls of the bowl is the same as creating the base except you allow the paper to stick up just a little bit each time higher than before.

Lastly, once the bowl is complete, have your students do a coat of Mod Podge over the surface of the whole thing to harder it and make it sturdier.

We don't have a kiln at my school yet so I only do one clay project a year right now because I have to take them to another school to fire them. So, I try to keep their projects kind of small. For my Art II class I had them construct clay boxes. In the assignment they had to construct the clay box and create a theme for their boxes. To express their theme they had to have some sort of 3D element on each side of the box.

Materials:

Clay

Variety of clay tools (at least have some plastic knives to cut clay slabs)

Rolling pins

Paper towels

Water

Rulers ( To measure out slabs)

Plastic bags to wrap up projects when students are not working

A kiln

Acrylic paint and brushes

Clear shiny acrylic spray ( To finish project and make it shiny)

In this assignment students studied color theory. The assignment was to create a color wheel using only blue, red, yellow, and white.

Materials:

Tempera paint ( red, blue, yellow, white, and black)

paint brushes (big and small sizes)

thick painting paper (square)

scrap printer paper

paper plates

protractors

rulers

pencils

Procedures:

Slideshow lesson with step by step instructions and video.

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1cGzDJLJ1EWQswYjGqr4H8_VacaEIEHOZ4xLpq6n-zWM/edit?usp=drivesdk

Take the square painting paper and use the paper plate to trace a circle in the middle of the paper.

Use the ruler to find the middle of the circle. This step is very important for the rest of the process to work correctly. Make sure your students take their time with this part. If a student is having trouble getting things to line up later in the process its possible they didn't center their design in the beginning.

Use the ruler to draw a line through the middle to divide the circle in half.

Next, use the protractor to divide the circle into 30 degree sections.

Then take the scrap printer paper to trace one of those 30 degree sections. On the scrap paper, the students will create a template of their design. The design can be what the students want but they had to have at least 6 sections going down toward the center.

Once the student has their design drawn out then they use the template to trace their design over and over to create the complete circular design. Note that every time the students trace into one sections, they will have to flip the paper over to trace in the next section.

Once the entire deign is drawn out in pencil, the student will use their paint to begin mixing colors and painting in their designs.

Art I Project - Manuscript Illumination

This was a project where students studied Medieval manuscript illumination. The assignment was to create a design which showcased one of the initials from their name in a font of their choice. Around the letter they had to create a border design which illustrated their personality, interests, and hobbies. They also had to incorporate some gold tempera paint somewhere in their design. The gold paint looks really cool when you see these in person.

First students created a one and a half inch border

Then students choose a font to illustrate

From there they begin sketching out their designs on their paper

This was an art II project that dealt with how dots have been used in art history. For this we looked at three different uses of the dot. We looked at Aborigine dot paintings, George Seurat's pointillism, and Roy Lichenstein's Pop art. The project was to find a pop culture figure and illustrate them using only dots of paint. In the background they were to create an interesting design which incorporates at least two aborigine designs. I thought that my students might hate this project because it was going to be time consuming, but they ending up really loving it.

Materials

Thick painting paper

Pencil for sketching out image

Tempera paint

Any sort of pointed stick (I used old wooden styluses from a scratch art project. You can also use the end of paint brushes)

Process

First each student had to choose their own pop culture figure to illustrate and they were responsible for getting a picture of their chosen person.

Students must decide whether or not they want to paint their paper to give it a background color. It really depends on what they are painting as to what they should do with the background. Some may choose to leave it white.

Lightly sketch out the illustration on the painting paper with pencil

Using tempera paint and a wooden stylus, students will use dots to create their image.

Art I Project

Students demonstrated their knowledge of how to create texture through the use of hatching, crosshatching, and stippling and a scratch art project.

Materials

Pre-made scratch art paper. Some scratch art paper only requires the use of wooden styluses and some require you to use a metal scratching tool. We used the softer paper. Word of warning, if the paper is shiny then it is probably a lot harder to scratch.

Wooden styluses for scratching

Photo sources. I checked out a bunch of animal books from the school library and let the students find animals that they liked.

Process

First, students must find their own photo source. I had the kids spend part of a class selecting their photos from library books. After that I photocopied everyone's individual photo and gave them the photocopy the next day.

Some student chose to draw their animals out on printer paper first and then transfer it over to the scratch art paper. Others preferred to just jump right into it my lighly drawing their animal in pencil on their scratch paper.

Next students used the wooden styluses to scratch the black ink off their paper to reveal the colors underneath.

Ink pen

Drawing paper

Something to draw ( I used assorted fruit and plastic flowers)

Process

Each student had a textured flower and some sort of fruit or vegetable at their table. Each student had to create a drawing from observation of what was on their desk.

The drawings had to be done by an ink pen. Each drawing had to be large enough to touch three sides of their paper and they had to use three different shading techniques.

I encouraged them to look for both texture and value when they were shading.

The rule was that each line they drew had to start on one side and then end on that same side. There are some exceptions to that rule, but in general that works best.

After drawing out their design, students took scissors and cut out all of their pieces. Make sure they know that they will be using all the parts they cut out so that they don't throw anything away.

Lastly they are going to glue the small sheet of paper and cutouts onto the larger sheet of paper.

Materials:

Drawing pencils

Erasers

Large drawing paper

Rulers

Photo sources printed out for each student

Process:

Each student chose a black and white photo of a variety of still lives. I tried to have a variety of pictures prepared that would interest each student.

Students use their ruler to draw a grid on their photograph and then a larger grid on their drawing paper. They also had to include a 1 inch border on the drawing. We doubled the sized of the photos. So, we went from a half inch grid to a 1 inch grid.

Begin an outline of the objects in the drawing and indicate where the shadows will be.

BEFORE starting with actually shading, the students must erase each section of their grid as they go. If they don't do this they will still have the grid visible on their paper when they are done.

Its important that the students try to create a full range of values.

To finish, go back and erase any smudges that got on the border.

Here are a few examples of their work...
Before we did this project we spent the week talking and learning about value and shading with a pencil. I gave a short introduction on the day we did this project by talking about what a grid drawing is and about how proportions are important when drawing from a grid.

To prep for this project, I found 4 photos online for the kids to draw. I then put each drawing into a word document and put a grid on top of the picture by inserting a "table" into the document. Next, I printed the photos off, labeled them with a number and letter, and then cut them up.

For the instructions, I gave each kid a 9 by 9 inch piece of paper. I then randomly gave out all the little pieces of the grid drawing. On the back of each piece of the grid there was a number and letter which would tell us later where the piece fit into the picture. So, to keep things organized, I had the kids label their paper with the same number and letter.

They had one class period (40 minutes) to complete their piece of the grid. Many of them tried to guess what the picture was but I made sure not to let on until it was time for them to piece it together.

The next day I had the class work together to assemble the picture. Meanwhile, I had two kids cutting out paper to the right dimensions so that we could tape the pictures down to something. Once they had the thing put together then I let them see the actual photograph so that they could check to see that all the pieces were in the right spot.
I recently graduated with my bachelor's degree in May and now I've already been hired to teach high school art this August. This is the day that many art education students look forward to but also feel a little anxiety about. You've taken all of the courses and now you have your very own classroom to take control of. Everything is up to you to decide and there are SO many decisions to make. I thought this blog could be a useful tool for other upcoming art teacher's when they are about to start their first year of teaching. This blog is a place for classroom ideas, dealing with different teaching challenges and of course, what everybody really wants, lesson plan and project ideas.Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14608166760974720009noreply@blogger.com0
